Chassis/Propulsion Design Brainstorming
Added by Nat Jeffries over 12 years ago
If anybody has ideas about how we should attach the motors and propellers to the robot, post them here. I made a Solidworks CAD model of one idea I had, and comments about improvements/problems with my design would be great.

I no longer have solidworks on my computer :(
is there any way you could post screenshots of your ideas?

I can post some screenshots. I also realized you already have a setup that is much simpler than mine. The only benefit I can find with my setup is it does not require servos and allows us to use non-watertight motors with watertight bearings. My idea would be much harder to implement though. and it requires curved pipe/ducting along with flow straighteners (probably). I also have some questions whether it will propel water in exactly the correct direction (hence the flow straighteners).

I just realized a critical design flaw- my propulsion method will not allow the robot to orient itself in a particular direction, a problem when using sensors. It's looking like your original idea may work best.

here is a fleshed out design from your google sketchup drawing. will this work? As far as I can see we only need one servo for direction control as long as each motor has a separate speed control.

You guys should be able to actually use this cad if you have SolidWorks. Sorry, I didn't realize I needed to make the assemblies into zip files.

Mech-E's. If the floppy disk parts don't work for ballast control, consider using this small threaded rod:
